Banana Blueberry Smoothie with Kefir
August 28, 2026 | Serves 1 | Prep 5 min | Total 5 min
Creamy and naturally sweet, with just the right amount of tang from the kefir, this Banana Blueberry Smoothie makes a satisfying breakfast on the go or afternoon pick-me-up. With approximately 27 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber, it has everything I want in a smoothie, without added sugar or protein powder.

I didn’t want this to be one of those smoothies that tastes good but leaves me wondering what else I can eat twenty minutes later.
I wanted banana and blueberry flavor, the tanginess of kefir, and enough protein and fiber to make it genuinely satisfying. Greek yogurt adds more protein and creaminess, while hemp hearts, ground chia seeds, and almond butter bring a combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats using only familiar, whole-food ingredients.
The first time I tested it, I used natural peanut butter because that was what I had. It was delicious, but my son took one sip and immediately said, “Mmmm, peanut butter.” He couldn’t taste the banana or blueberries at all, and I wanted this to taste like a banana blueberry smoothie.
Almond butter turned out to be exactly right. It adds a subtle nutty richness without taking over, leaving the banana, blueberries, and kefir tasting like the main event.
And because the fruit provides all the sweetness it needs, there’s no honey, maple syrup, or other added sugar.
Lightly sweet, lightly tart, and totally delish!
Why It's on My Midlife Table
I really love using kefir in this smoothie. Its tang balances the sweetness of the fruit, and together with the Greek yogurt, it gives me an easy way to work more fermented foods into my day. They also create that creamy, satisfying texture I want.
Frozen wild blueberries bring more than their deep color and concentrated blueberry flavor. They have approximately twice the antioxidant capacity of ordinary cultivated blueberries, helping protect our cells from oxidative stress. And what woman couldn't use more of that?! Sidenote: have you ever picked wild blueberries in Maine? I highly recommend it.
This smoothie keeps earning its place on my table because it’s made with familiar, whole-food ingredients, tastes genuinely delicious, and makes nourishing myself feel easy. That’s exactly what midlife-friendly looks like to me.
Nourishment Snapshot
Here's what this recipe brings to the table.
- Protein: ~26 g
- Fiber: ~11 g
- Total Sugar: ~35 g, naturally occurring from fruit and dairy
- Added Sugar: 0 g
- Healthy Fats: From almond butter, hemp hearts, and chia seeds

A Few Things You'll Need
- Plain unsweetened kefir
- Plain unsweetened Greek yogurt
- Frozen wild blueberries
- Small ripe banana
- Hemp hearts
- Ground chia seeds
- Natural, unsweetened almond butter

Cook's Notes & Substitutions
- Blueberries: I love frozen wild blueberries because they're rich in fiber, higher in antioxidants and have been studied for their anti-inflammatory effects, but regular frozen blueberries work beautifully too. Bottom line: use what you have.
- Choose a just-ripe banana: Use a small banana that is yellow and ripe without lots of brown spots. It provides natural sweetness while still letting the blueberries come through. Less-ripe bananas retain more resistant starch, which is gradually converted into sugars during ripening. Blood-sugar responses are individual, however, and the protein, fiber, fat, and full composition of the smoothie matter, too.
- Ground chia seeds: Ground chia blends more seamlessly into smoothies and make the protein and omega-3 fats inside the seeds easier for your body to access. Whole chia is still an excellent source of fiber, but I highly recommend keeping ground chia in your pantry alongside it for smoothies like this one. My go-to brand can be found on my Favorites page. Note: Ground chia absorbs liquid quickly, so enjoy the smoothie soon after blending because it will continue to thicken as it sits.
- Check the nut butter: Choose natural almond butter made without added sugar. Peanut butter also works and tastes delicious, but its stronger flavor can easily overpower the banana and blueberries.
- Adjust the consistency only if needed: Kefir and Greek yogurt vary in thickness. If your smoothie turns out thicker than you prefer, blend in cold water 1 tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Want even more protein? Add a scoop of your preferred unflavored or vanilla protein powder and a little extra kefir or water as needed.
